Skin Care News:

The bad news… sunbathing, smoking and drinking can cause you to look old before your time.

The good news… we have skin care products that prevent premature aging and improve the appearance of existing damage.

There are a number of non-surgical “refinishing treatments” available for individuals who want to eliminate or soften imperfections on their facial skin and achieve a clearer, fresher look.  These treatments include skin care management, chemical peels, collagen, and Botox.  These “surface repair “ treatments can enhance your appearance and give your skin a smoother, fresher look.

Skin Care programs offered in our office:

The single most important key to healthy younger looking skin is a good skin care system that meets your own specific needs.  Our office offers the following:

Theraderm – 4-part lactic acid based skin care system

Glyderm – 4-part glycolic acid based skin care system

Obagi 8-part, lactic & glycolic acid based with Vitamin C & Hydroquinone and Retin-A.

Please remember, if you are planning a more aggressive line of facial rejuvenation – such as laser resurfacing or surgery – skincare management promotes faster healing and recovery.

Chemical Peels:

The chemical peel is a non-invasive technique for restoring wrinkled, blemished, unevenly pigmented, or sun-damaged facial skin, using a chemical solution to peel away the skin’s top layers.  The new cells that form during the healing process produce a smother, tighter, younger looking skin surface.  Our office offers a variety of chemical peels ranging from a “lunch time” peel to a more aggressive TCA peel  such as the Obagi Blue Peel.

Collagen:

Collagen is actually part of the natural support structure of you skin.  Wrinkles form when this natural collagen thins.  This loss with the passage of time, but sun exposure, pollution, health heredity and lifestyle also play roles.  Without enough collagen, wrinkles and lines start wherever the skin moves.  Collagen replacement therapy replenishes the skin’s collagen layer, smoothing lines and wrinkles and adding definition to lip borders from the inside out.  The results are immediate.

Botox:

Botox (lyophilized, purified botulinum toxin) is an excellent treatment to soften the signs of facial aging. Injection of Botox directly into a muscle causes chemical denervation of the injected muscle, with resultant smoothing of facial wrinkles.  Patients may experience transient headache or local tingling after injection, but the most common side effect appears to be local bruising at the injection sites.  This procedure last less than an hour and you may perform your usual facial skin care regimen that evening.

HEALTH NEWS: Study hints smoking destroys collagen

A recent medical report suggests that smoking switches on a processes involved in destroying collagen, the structural protein that gives skin its elasticity. The link between smoking and wrinkles has been known for years, but scientists haven’t worked out exactly how cigarettes age the skin. The protein, matrix metalloproteinase-1, or MMP-1, implicated in wrinkles from sunbathing, was highly active in smokers and silent in nonsmokers. This indicates that something in cigarettes is injuring skin in a manner  similar to the sun, or at least through the same pathways.

What’s the best way to avoid wrinkles?

Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen: Broad-spectrum sunscreens have the power to help protect against UVA and UVB rays (widely identified as the cause of skin cancer).  To avoid sun damaged skin and wrinkles, adhere to the following suggestions.

  1. Avoid direct sunlight between the hours of 10 A.M. and 2 P.M., when the sun is at its strongest.
  2. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher that block UVA and UVB rays.
  3. Apply sun block all over the body, completely coating areas like the ears, neck and hands, 30 minutes before going outside.
  4. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or every time you come out of the water.
  5. Wear cotton clothing and a hat.
  6. Use an umbrella when in direct sunlight; rays can be reflected off water, sand and even cement.

Your Skin & Vitamin C: Ultra violet A (UVA) radiation is the major culprit in photo aging.  UVA is present throughout the year.  It can pass through the windows of your home, office, and car, and it damages your skin by penetrating into its deeper layers.  Even sunscreens that contain UVA protection do not offer total protection.  Vitamin C to the rescue! According to an article published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, studies have suggested that vitamin C is an excellent antioxidant for UVA and ultraviolet B (UVB), making it a useful addition to your daily sunscreen.  Topical products for the skin containing specially formulated vitamin C can now provide additional protection for your skin. Unlike most sunscreens, once vitamin C gets into the skin, it cannot be rubbed or washed away.  Topical vitamin C can even be used to treat sunburn.  Researchers have suggested that vitamin C can increase collagen synthesis, a reaction that is important in wound healing.  It also appears to be useful in reducing fine wrinkling.  Contact our office for information on Cffectives Vitamin C Serums, the most potent topical form of vitamin C available and other related products.

Cffectives® corrects sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, and brown spots. Cffectives also has anti-inflammatory benefits, which reduces redness and irritation from Retin-A, Lasers, and other resurfacing procedures. Vitamin-C acts as a potent antioxidant, neutralizing the effects of free oxygen radicals and reversing the effects of aging. However, to do this Vitamin-C must be in a stable form and have the ability to penetrate to the deeper layers of Skin.

Cffectives contains the only form of Vitamin-C the human body can utilize, L-Ascorbic Acid. Stability and Potency is maintained through a patented process, which prevents Cffectives from turning yellow, or brown as other Vitamin-C products do. When other Vitamin-C products turn yellow or brown, they have oxidized (thus lost their anti-oxidant benefits) which in turn causes them to lose potency. Cffectives will maintain its' clarity for 2 years, thus is a very stable Vitamin-C serum. Penetration to the Dermis is also important for a Vitamin-C product to be effective. The Cffectives delivers more Vitamin-C to the deeper layers of skin than the leading competitors. Therefore, Cffectives has met the 2 criterions to be an excellent Vitamin-C serum.

Cffectives can be incorporated into your current Nu-Derm system, applied alone, or used as part of your maintenance program. It is applied in the morning after your cleansing routine. There are more directions on the website on how to incorporate Cffectives into your Nu-Derm system.

Cffectives will enhance and boost your Nu-Derm results, while reducing the redness associated with the program. If you are not on the Nu-Derm system, the Cffectives is an excellent and easy way to treat your skin. Just wash your face, followed by applying the Cffectives. A sunscreen is highly recommended after applying Cffectives. If you are not on the Nu-Derm system or are on a Maintenance Program, you can apply Cffectives twice a day. To apply to skin:

  • Cffectives 10% Face Serum: Use the Eye Dropper in the Serum to apply about 10 drops in the palm of your hand, apply all over skin excluding the eye area.
  • Cffectives 5% Eye Serum: Use the Eye Dropper in the Serum to apply 2-4 drops to the palm of your hand, and apply with finger tips under eyes, and around crows-feet.

Cffectives is the most effective single product you can use to restore healthy skin, and prevent future damage from occurring from environmental factors such as the sun, smoking, and pollutants. Your skin will begin to show a clearer, healthier glow within days of use.
